About Valdemar Skov
Valdemar Skov began his career as an artisan in 1986, apprenticing to sculptor and cabinetmaker Jonathan Clowes; then working at cabinetmaking and fine homebuilding for several more years on the coast of Maine. He has been self-employed since 1990. Primarily working in wood, he specializes in ornamental carving for furniture and architectural work, along with designing and building furniture, replication and restoration carving, and occasional forays into blacksmithing and stone sculpture. His interest in hand engraving has developed over the last two decades.

Building on his experience working in other media, Valdemar brings his eye and hand to the art of engraving. In addition to engraving jewelry for the trade and other hand engraving, his involvement with the woodworking community and his appreciation of fine tools has led him to an association with Lie-Nielsen Toolworks.
Valdemar designs and cuts monograms, inscriptions, and decorative engraving on Lie-Nielsen handplanes and backsaws, as well as other fine tools.

He was commissioned by Lie-Nielsen Toolworks in 2006 to engrave the lever caps of their 25th Anniversary No.4½ bronze smoothing planes, a Special Edition production run of 500.

Exemplary craftsmanship and design capabilities have brought Valdemar many exciting commissions, including designing and building a set of twenty-four Sheraton-style chairs for the State dining room in the Blaine House, Maine's Governor's mansion; carvings for the new Speaker of the House's podium in the Maine State House, a Percent for Art commission; benches of maple, granite and leather, also for the Maine State House; religious statuary including a one-half life-size crucifix for St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Rockland, Maine; a full suite of neoclassical carvings for a private library; a reproduction of a John Townsend (Newport style block-front) tall-case clock featuring a silvered brass "single sheet" dial designed and engraved by Valdemar; and a reception desk for Orient Express Hotels, built with cabinetmaker William Evans, with whom Valdemar frequently collaborates.

Valdemar has twice been formally recognized for his work by the Maine State legislature and has been featured in numerous print articles, including profiles in This Old House and New Old House magazines. An Italian renaissance fireplace mantel, newel post, and associated carvings were also featured in a separate issue of This Old House magazine. He teaches woodcarving at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship.
